If the person has just recently begun withdrawal, I do hope he or she is in a medically supervised detox program. If so, continuing loving, caring for them, having compassion and empathy for them, trying to understand what they are going through, and taking care of them to the best of your ability is the best you can do for them. But you'll never be able to keep up that chivalry unless you spend equal time caring for yourself.

Do yourself a favor and get hold of your local Al-Anon, now.

Try not to do it alone. Ask a friend or family member to help if possible. You may want to seek professional help for the one going through withdrawal. And you can always seek some help for yourself.
Remember you are going through a very difficult time as well.
Good Luck to you!

Get them a paint by number set and tell them you want them to get good enough to be able to paint your portrait. What I mean is: keep suggesting alternative methods of self expression. A hobby sounds maybe "corny" but this person's main interest needs to be constanly shifted and refocused. Be prepared for relapses. It happens. It's a tough thing to do. A membership(even short term) to a gym would ease some of their nevous tension.

Al-anon. And if the person withdrawing can go to AA or MA. Huge help.
Even if they won't go, I strongly advise you to go to Al Anon. You need support too !
