My theory is replacement activity, which then leads to "normal" activities. When I quit using
1.) I wanted to stop
2.) I quit hanging around people who were using, or at least when they did I wasn't around.
3.) Instead of drinking and smoking, I replaced them with activities that I liked, such as watching movies, playing sports, Video games, ect.
I had a friend who smoked daily, and you wouldn't know he was high, because he became "normaly" balanced. When he wasn't high he was a really aggressive person. So for person like this I recommend a slow transition, with hopes not to relapse. I hope your friend can quit, if it is that important to them.

he probably relied on weed to keep him nice and calm now its gone hes got nothing he might be quite angry and erratic for a while just let him at it. he should probably not go totally cold turkey that could cause mental problems, tel him go to a doctor.

Marijuana withdrawal can be pretty hard. I guess just listen to what he has to say. It might help if he could vent or something.
