I heard that any addiction can cause the brain to release chemicals like dopamine and endorphins, so can going cold turkey cause mild withdrawals like strange dreams, insomnia, restlessness.. etc

My grand father has those symptoms and he found out that he had suppressed thoughts and he is now in a mental clinic

Addiction to drugs, yes. As for gambling, it isn’t a physical addiction, it is more psychological. To get detoxificated from drug addiction you need to visit a special clinic.

When I quit, it was cold turkey.
    The timeline went like this:
    - Hour 1, woke up, needed a smoke.
    - Hour 12, Irritable for 30 minutes.
    - Hour 16, fiending for weed for about 5 minutes.
    - Hour 24, depression, inability to sleep (had to take a melatonin, which in and of itself causes weird dreams)
    - Day 2, no desire to eat, miss the muchies.
    - Day 3, got my energy back, had the energy to work out without need for caffeine.
    - Day 5, dreamed of smoking and woke up stoned.
    - Day 7, almost all desire to smoke was gone. As long as I stay away from those who smoke I can resist the urge to smoke, when the urge comes.
    - Day 30, whenever I dream of smoking, I wake up and sometime during that day I fiend for weed for a few seconds.
    - Day 90, still test positive and still have cravings at random intervals.

There’s definitely a withdrawal syndrome. I didn’t feel restless much if at all, but that’s me. You’re not me so your symptoms, times, and reactions will be different, similar but different.

Gambling I would assume would manifest itself as an almost unresistable urge to engage in the gambling activity. Any resistance would be met with irritibility.

Yes, you can have withdrawals from anything you are addicted to. The severity of withdrawals and whether they will be physical or otherwise depends on the substance you are addicted to. In fact even after some one has gone through their addiction treatment the lack of support can sometimes cause withdrawals to come back and the addict to relapse. There is specialized post rehab programs for this called relapse prevention. Check out my source for more information on this.

I hope this was of help to you.
